What is ROS test?
Precise diagnostics in fertility science allows the doctor to make the correct diagnosis and choose the treatment that will help to effectively overcome infertility. Therefore, a ROS test is a new research method that has appeared in the arsenal of our urologists and fertility specialists.
What is ROS test?
The ROS test is a special analysis that allows you to determine the amount of reactive oxygen species in semen and the level of oxidative stress in sperm cells. Otherwise, it is called “sperm oxidative stress test”.
What is oxidative stress?
In our body, there is a balance between reactive oxygen species and antioxidants that neutralize them. If this balance is disturbed, for example, against the background of inflammation, then there will be more reactive oxygen species. This causes oxidative stress - the process of cell damage and death against the background of oxidation.
It is believed that 30 - 80% cases of male infertility are associated with the damaging effects of oxidative stress on sperm. This pathology occurs in infertile men 4-6 times more often than in men with normal fertility.
Why oxidative stress is dangerous for sperm?
A large amount of reactive oxygen species in semen has a very bad effect on sperm cells:
- reduces the mobility and number of germ cells
- worsens the integrity, destroying the protein shell
- damages DNA, increasing the fragmentation index.
When do you need an oxidative stress testing in semen?
In situations where a man has:
- bad spermogram results
- suspected infection, prostatitis, an abnormal white-cell count in semen
- varicocele
- idiopathic infertility
- IVF or IUI failures in his history or his wife had miscarriages
Do you need to prepare to take the ROS test?
The ROS test and spermogram are different studies, but since the analysis also requires ejaculate, the preparation will be very similar. You can read more about it here.
To take a ROS test you can book an appointment with EVACLINIC IVF in Minsk through our website or by calling 409.
